Celebrating Volunteers - GA Ag in the Classroom
We love to celebrate volunteer efforts to educate about agriculture!
Georgia Ag in the Classroom held it's Educational Leadership Conference (sponsored by the GFB Women’s Leadership Committee) in early March and “First Peas to the Table” and the AFBFA First Peas to the Table Contest were a major part of it.
Rhonda Williams, the Georgia 2nd District and State Chair, and Melissa Bottoms, 5th District Chair, presented a workshop on the book, "First Peas to the Table" and some of the activities in the Educator Guide. Each of the 70 or so counties in Georgia who sent attendees were sent a copy of the book and an educator guide. Additionally, the state committee went to an inner city school in Columbus and read the book to their 45 kindergarten students. They ended the school visit with helping the students plant peas in a cup.
The conference is sponsored by the GFB Women’s Leadership Committee, but open to all volunteers who want to start or grow their county ag literacy program. In addition to volunteers, attendees also included county office managers and teachers. Three of the four workshops focus on ag literacy and one is reserved for a topic of special interest to Georgia farmers (i.e. farm safety or estate planning for farm families). This year, Lindsay Calvert taught attendees how to have Ag Conversations with Ease.
The event was a success!
