Foundation supports STEAM summer camp
The Foundation recently sponsored the 2nd year of the USDA 's "STEAM" summer camp for urban youth. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) partnered with the Governance Lab (GovLab) to host two separate two-week camps for middle and high school students.
The Foundation recently sponsored the 2nd year of the USDA’s “STEAM” summer camp for urban youth. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) partnered with the Governance Lab (GovLab) to host two separate two-week camps for middle and high school students. This camp strives to teach students how to use crowdsourcing and open data to make vital decisions in agriculture and food.
This year’s camp focused on food safety, forestry and urban agriculture. The students recorded urban gardens around the National Mall, participated in hands-on lessons about nutrition and toured the UDC green roof.
Before the campers journeyed across DC, they explored data science with the GovLab curriculum, learning what type of issues can be explored through data, how to gather data, and more. The USDA hopes this program inspires students to become data scientists, data analysts or even a farmer!
